Benefits of Being Active:Kids need to be physically active to maintain their health and wellbeing. Why? Because they/we must all adhere to the genetic principle of Use - Disuse. That is, if we use our body parts they get stronger. If we don't use them, they get weaker and atrophy. In short, we were made to move which is why not doing so too often leads to a mountain of painful chronic diseases! The good news, regular physical activity provides these benefits and more: strong muscles and bones • weight control • decreased risk of developing chronic diseases • better sleep • a better outlook on life It wasn't that many years ago that ongoing physical activity was part of a child's every day life whether it be playing in the neighborhood, on the playground, or at school. Times have changed. With increased interest in video games and TV programs, lack of neighborhood play opportunities, a feeling that they aren't good at sports, and busy working families, it is often a real challenge to keep our children motivated to get enough healthy physical activity.
